Baldur’s Gate 3 Monk subclasses and races with leveling up characteristics Guide

Baldurs Gate 3 is made in the genre of tactical strategy and RPG, where characters can freely move around the map. At the same time, the combat process itself takes place in tactical mode, the heroes move within a certain area in turn. Players will have to assemble a good squad and go in search of answers related to the parasites that attacked our hero. The game Baldurs Gate 3 was developed by developers from Larian Studios.

Baldurs Gate 3 has a slightly complex character customization scheme. When choosing a character, based on the class, you can choose his race. Or choose a character based on race, and then decide on a class. However, not all classes are ideal for the selected character of the corresponding race. Classes allow you to determine combat tactics, since each class has its own abilities. As for race, this is where you can see the characteristics of a character.

The article presents material on the “Monk” class, with an analysis of its features and all available subclasses. You can familiarize yourself with the recommended characteristics when initially setting up the hero. The most suitable races for the “Monk” class with their advantages are indicated. Having familiarized yourself with the listed points, you can quickly decide on the subclass you choose and increase your pleasure from playing the game.

Features of the Monk class in Baldur Gate 3.

The “Monk” class is the second class where the hero does not wear armor at all. There is an opportunity to wear armor, but in this case the features of the class are lost in priority. Unlike the Barbarian class, the Monk also prefers to fight without weapons or with monastic weapons. At first glance, it may seem that “Monk” is not particularly needed in the team. But, if you take a closer look and understand its features more carefully, you may be surprised, since its role in the team can be very useful. Despite his clothing and weapons, his primary position on the battlefield is in the front row.

Abilities of the Monk class, in the game Baldur Gate 3.

  • The power of “Qi”.

Monks draw strength from their cosmic prosperity. To do this, they learned to use the power of “Qi” on the battlefield. “Power of Chi” is a special magic of the “Monks”, which allows you to use special techniques and special spells. At the same time, the number of “Qi” points is limited and allows you to perform several special actions. Actions and spells have different amounts of Chi cost per cast.

  • Protection without armor.

The Monk’s reflexes protect him no worse than his armor. The effect applies if the hero has no armor. If there is no armor, then the “Armor Class” increases by an amount equal to the “Wisdom” modifier. To increase efficiency, you need to pump up the “Wisdom” characteristic to a decent level and further pump it up. But, most likely, the “Wisdom” modifier will not be more than + 3 units. Since you need to pump up other characteristics.

  • Martial arts, “Dexterous attacks.”

“Monk” gains the ability to deal additional damage if he attacks opponents with “Monk Weapons” or without weapons. The attacks and damage dealt depend on the “Dexterity” stat; the higher the “Dexterity”, the higher the damage. But, the “Dexterity” parameter must be higher than the “Strength” characteristic.

  • Martial arts, “Skilled strikes.”

Thanks to “Skilled Strikes”, you can increase the damage dealt by 1-4 units of crushing damage if attacks are made with “Monk Weapons” or without weapons. But, such damage is added to standard damage or damage slightly less than standard damage. That is, the damage cannot be higher than the damage that would normally be dealt. This ability allows you to ensure that damage passes through protected enemies where there is a chance of causing little damage.

  • Martial arts, “Bonus attack without weapons.”

If the “Monk” uses the “Monk Weapon” or makes attacks without a weapon, then there is a chance of making an additional attack without a weapon. This ability will not work if spell attacks are used. To increase the likelihood of an additional attack, it is advisable to perform the last attack action on the enemy without a weapon. Then perhaps the Unarmed Bonus Attack ability could work on the last attack.

Leveling up the characteristics of the “Monk” class in the game Baldur Gate 3.

The most basic characteristic of the “Monk” is “Dexterity”, which is responsible for his movement on the battlefield and damage in battle. The secondary characteristic, in importance, will be “Endurance”. To work with spells and actions, the characteristics “Wisdom” and “Strength” may be required. In most cases, Wisdom is required, as it also raises the natural defense modifier. “Strength” is needed for some spells, so it doesn’t make much sense to pump it up. Thus, we may need to level up as many as 4 stats, which is a bit much.

So, we pump up “Agility” to the maximum, about 16 to 17 points, so the attacks will be stronger. But, to increase attack power, the “Dexterity” parameter must be higher than “Strength”. Next you need to decide what will be more important: your health (Endurance) or your spell protection (Wisdom). We suggest pumping up “Wisdom” to 15 points and assigning + 1 bonus unit. And spend 13 points on “Endurance”. This will allow you to attack well with the “Monk’s Weapon” or without a weapon, and work with spells and actions.

Despite the fact that “Strength”, “Charisma” and “Intelligence”, you should still pump up. You can allocate 10 skill points to “Strength” and “Charisma”. This will allow you to bring a little more items and communicate better with neutral players than in the case of the minimum values. You can remove 2 points from “Strength” and add “Endurance” to the characteristic to increase your health. But our “Monk” does not need “Intelligence” at all; you can set the minimum value of 8 points.

Race for the Monk class in the game Baldur Gate 3.

The choice of race for the “Monk” class should be based on the characteristics being pumped up and the chosen method for attacking opponents. Added to all this is an important point, moving around the battlefield. Since our “Monk” fights in close combat and without a weapon, good mobility and range of movement are very important to him. At the same time, in some cases, you can consider races under the selected subclasses of the “Monk” class in order to emphasize some features.

  • Race “Half Orc”.

The Half Orc race can be considered for classes and heroes that fight in close combat. Since in this case their damage can be significantly increased, thanks to the “Furious Attacks” ability. The “Furious Attacks” ability will allow the “Monk” to produce triple critical damage if it attacks with the “Monk Weapon”. A nice feature will be “Night Vision”, which will help in passing through dark areas of locations.

Perhaps the coolest feature for the Monk will be the ability to resurrect, thanks to Unbreakable Fortitude. That is, “Unbending Fortitude” will allow the character not to die with 0 units of health remaining, but to gain the remaining 1 unit of health. The remaining 1 unit of health allows you to survive, make an attack or change position to a safe place. This significantly increases the survivability of the Monk in close combat. At the same time, the movement speed of the “Half-Orc” race is 9 meters.

  • Elf race, “Forest Elf” and Half Elf race with a sub-race “Forest Half Elf”.

The choice of the Elf race with the “Forest Elf” race suits our “Monk” with its good movement speed. The Elf race allows you to move 9 meters and + 1.5 meters is issued thanks to the “Forest Elf” race. Elves also have “Elven Training”, which allows them to use weapons. But this weapon is not suitable for our “Monk”, as it cancels bonuses to attacks. The possibility of “Night Vision” will be nice, so that our hero can see better in the dark.

  • Race “Drow”.

The choice of the Drow race is also attractive for a good movement range of 9 meters. There is also “Enhanced Night Vision”, which allows you to see up to 24 meters in the dark. The ability to carry weapons will not be very interesting, since the “Monk” fights more with his hands and “Monk Weapons”. Therefore, “Drow” can be classified as a standard race, with some very useful features.

  • Race “Dragon Born”.

The “Dragon Born” race allows you to make the “Monk” a little more resistant to certain elements. Since choosing a race gives resistance to the selected negative effect and an attack action. Any race that has a Dexterity test is suitable. One of the suitable ones is resistance to fire damage. The hero will also be able to move a distance of 9 meters.

Subclasses of the Monk class, in the game Baldur Gate 3.

The choice of subclass for the “Monk” class opens at the third level. There are three subclasses to choose from: “The Way of the Four Elements,” “The Way of the Open Palm,” and “The Way of the Shadow.” You can select one subclass from those listed. All presented subclasses differ significantly from each other and change the tactics of battle on the battlefield. At the same time, each subclass is good in its own way; it is important to understand the advantages and apply them at the right time.

  • Subclass “Way of the Four Elements”

With the subclass “Way of the Four Elements”, our “Monk” becomes almost a magician, but it is not quite a magician. Since he retains his fighting qualities using the “Qi” energy. Good attacking spells appear in your arsenal, from which you will have to choose those that are suitable for your pumped-up characteristics and the desired tactical maneuvers. And even with the “Way of the Four Elements” subclass, the main position on the battlefield will be the first row, although there is the possibility of ranged attacks with spells. This opens up the possibility of defeating enemy opponents who attack with ranged weapons.

One of the main features of the “Way of the Four Elements” subclass is “Harmony of Fire and Water,” which restores half of the spent “Qi” points. This way you can use “Actions” more often. At the same time, you can use “Harmony of Fire and Water” only once before a long rest. It is also possible to select three “Actions” from the list. It is advisable to take attack actions, “Fire Snake Fangs”, “Water Scourge” and “Rime Blade”. These spells go well with the characteristics of the “Monk”. The Fist of Unbreakable Air spell may be considered, but it may require the Strength stat.

  • Subclass “Way of the Open Palm”.

Having chosen the “Way of the Open Palm” subclass, you need to prepare for hand-to-hand combat with opponents. The main weapon of the “Monk” is his hands and the “Qi” energy; with his hands one can inflict good damage on enemies, and the control of “Qi” will allow one to restore “Body Integrity” health points. Melee attacks allow you to make two attacks at a time and have a chance to lay down your opponent. One of the most useful attack actions is “Hail of Blows: Push”, where the hero deals damage and pushes the enemy 5 meters.

Also, the subclass “Way of the Open Palm” makes it possible to attack opponents an additional +1 time. At level 6, “Improved Movement Without Armor” unlocks, which allows you to additionally move +4.5 meters. Another very good feature is the extra damage with a choice of effect, you can choose “Mind Projection”, “Soul Projection” and “Body Projection”. The type of damage with a negative effect will depend on the choice.

  • Subclass “Way of the Shadow”.

The Path of the Shadow subclass makes the Monk a hero that attacks from a hidden position. At the same time, stealth attacks are modified with a teleporting ability, with good attack damage. You can control enemies using Shadow Art: Darkness, which creates a dark cloud that interferes with the vision and attack actions of shooters. You can also see in the dark until a long rest, thanks to “Shadow Art: Night Vision.” At level 5, you can additionally attack the enemy +1 time.

To increase survivability, the “Way of the Shadow” subclass provides an additional movement speed “Improved Movement without Armor.” The arsenal includes several teleporting actions, where you can teleport from shadow to shadow and the ability to hide in the shadows and be undetected by enemies. All this makes the “Monk” an excellent fighter of a hidden plan, who is capable of inflicting quite decent damage in close combat. And teleporting actions can guarantee a safe retreat or a lightning attack.

Conclusion on the “Monk” class in the game Baldur Gate 3.

Looking at the Monk class, we can say that this is another type of support, where support for the team is associated with attack. Since he does not have “Heavy Armor”, his armor is somewhat reminiscent of the “Barbarian”, and his combat technique is almost like the “Rogue”. But, a lot depends on the chosen “Monk” subclass, because they noticeably change the tactics of tactical actions. It is important to level up your Agility to maximum to increase your damage. Increased Agility is suitable for the Way of the Open Palm and Way of the Shadow subclasses. But for the subclass “Way of the Four Elements”, you need to pump up “Dexterity” and “Wisdom”, which will increase combat effectiveness.

In our opinion, the coolest subclass for melee combat is the “Way of the Open Palm” subclass, thanks to double attacks and the ability to restore health points and Chi energy. These moments significantly increase the character’s survivability and the amount of damage dealt to enemies. At the same time, some actions allow you to push back several meters and thus you can throw a strong enemy, for example, off a cliff. It is worth adding that the “Monk” in the “Way of the Open Palm” subclass is very similar to the “Barbarian”, only without weapons, since both do not wear armor.
